What is the "Honor Flight Fifty?"

First of all, thank you very much for stopping by! I'm training for and running the Fall 50 (yes, that's 50 miles) this year as a fundraising effort for the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. I'm going to train all summer to run 50 miles on October 22nd to help raise money for an absolutely crucial mission.
The Honor Flight's Mission is to fly WWII veterans and terminally ill veterans from other wars to see their memorials in Washington, DC. They also work closely with schools throughout Wisconsin to ensure that the heroic stories of our veterans are built into the curriculum so that future generations will fully appreciate the sacrifices made on their behalf.
Time is of the Essence! As the last of the Greatest Generation approach their final curtain call, we are witnesses to a tremendous loss as we embrace a precious opportunity! They will die - 900 heroes - men and women who defined dignity, pass from us each and every day. 900 heroes, every day. They take their stories and history and enormous bravery with them. But many are still among us, and while there is no earthly way we can approach a gift that reflects our depth of gratitude, we can thank them anyway.
By supporting the Honor Flight Fifty, you'll help the Honor Flight Fly! 100% of donations will go to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.

A Comment on Le Tour

I can't help but be sentimental this year on The Tour de France. Last year at this time I spent countless hours watching "Le Tour" in the early morning hours, as well as countless hours watching replays of the day's events at night, while holding my son, Edwin.
Edwin didn't always go to sleep when told. He also didn't always stay asleep. Hence, the odd hours of "Papa-Edwin Time" when I would do my best to give Ellie a break. I should have a NIGHTLY memory of helping out with Edwin if I wanted to do my "give Ellie a break" penance any justice.
Nonetheless, I'll never forget the moments when Eddy wouldn't go to sleep after time with Mom. She would come out of the nursery, hand him over to me, and I would take him downstairs, where I would spend anywhere from .10 to 1.0 miles on the treadmill (which I've rigged up to a 12% incline) watching the bikers and watching Eddy's eyes, as he fell asleep.

I'm happy to see Cadel win, and I'm even happier to think about next year, when Andy and Frank (dubbed as "Frandy" in the WSJ) compete once again for the top step on the podium. At some point soon Edwin will be joining me in the action.

Oh yeah, and we're expecting baby #2 in January...so I've plenty of reasons to stay very focused for the Fall 50. I'm not sure what life entails come 2012!

  1. Congrats on baby #2 Nic! You'll be amazed how different the second one can be. But having them grow up so close together in age will be wonderful. My girls are 23 months apart and they do a lot of the same activities now. It's great when they can go somewhere and play with each other.

I was also really glad to see Cadel win the tour this year. pulling hard for him.
